what is connective tissue grafting (gum grafting)?

Connective tissue grafting, or gum grafting, is a special procedure our cosmetic and implant dentist, Dr. Jason Kasarsky, performs for patients who need gum tissue added to the gum line. While gum grafting can reduce the effects of periodontal disease causing the gums to recede, Dr. Kasarsky can also improve the appearance of the gums that do not have disease (some patients are referred to us to have their "toothy smile" reduced). If you would like more information about gum grafting, please schedule a consultation at our New York, NY office.

how does connective tissue grafting work?

Connective tissue grafting is a procedure to repair the gum line, where the tops of the teeth are exposed more than normal. When the gum line recesses, it opens up the tooth to more cavities, gum disease, and dental issues, and sometimes it can add a cosmetic benefit for the patient's smile. In our treatment room, Dr. Kasarsky will excise a layer of tissue from the palate (top of the mouth), and suture it to the gum line. The extra tissue will grow into the existing tissue over time, and create an appropriate gum line.

what to do after a gum graft procedure

If there are special instructions regarding your care, we will make sure you leave our office with a full understanding of the dos and donts of gum grafting aftercare. It is very important to follow a regular brushing and flossing regime, and use a mouthwash as directed by your dentist. Also, keep all follow-up appointments with Dr. Kasarsky, and continue with your routine dental checkups twice a year.

Connective Tissue Grafting FAQ

Does a connective tissue grafting procedure hurt?

No, during the procedure, Dr. Kasarsky will numb the treatment area with a local anesthetic. After the procedure, during the recovery phase, it is normal to feel some soreness or discomfort. Most people can expect this discomfort to reside in about 2 – 3 days and can use over-the-counter pain relievers (always consult your doctor before taking any medication).

How long does a gum graft take to heal?

Most patients can expect to be fully healed in about 1 – 2 weeks after their procedure.

Can a gum graft address cosmetic issues?

Yes, it can. While most connective tissue grafts, or gum grafts, are used to treat gum recession as a result of periodontal disease, this procedure can also provide a cosmetic enhancement for people with a high gum line that causes a “toothy” smile.
