Overview

When all other gum treatments have failed, Dr. Jason Kasarsky, New York City dentist and periodontal surgeon, may suggest osseous surgery to save your teeth and reduce the size of the pockets causing further decay and future tooth loss. These deep pockets are not only hard for you to clean at home with daily oral hygiene routine, they are also a problem for your dentist and hygienist to clean, as well. Dr. Kasarsky uses state-of-the-art equipment to reduce the pockets in your gums with the hopes of saving you from tooth loss, expensive restorations, and less time in the dentist's chair. If you would like to learn more about osseous surgery or have a referral, we would like to offer you a dental consultation at your earliest convenience. Also, please ask us about our nitrous oxide or oral conscious sedation dentistry that we offer in our office if it would make your appointment more comfortable.

Do I qualify for Osseous Surgery?

If all other measures fail, including more conservative treatment, Dr. Kasarsky may recommend that you consider osseous surgery. This procedure is used for our New York, NY patients whose bacteria are impossible for both the patient and our team to eradicate. Generally, root planing and scaling will be attempted as an initial measure before osseous surgery is considered. If you think your periodontal issues might qualify you for osseous surgery, we are happy to help. Call our office today to arrange your consultation with Dr. Kasarsky.

What are the Benefits of Osseous Surgery?

By eliminating deep periodontal pockets, osseous surgery helps to reduce the risk of further infection and bacterial growth. This results in improved gum health, preventing the progression of gum disease and potential tooth loss. Osseous surgery also promotes the regeneration of supporting bone tissue around the teeth, enhancing their stability. Additionally, the procedure can contribute to a more aesthetically pleasing smile by addressing gum recession. Overall, benefits of osseous surgery include:

  • Proactively manage advanced gum disease and bacteria when other treatments have failed
  • Reduce worsening symptoms and progression of bacterial grwoth
  • Restore gum health and comfort
  • Reduce the risk of tooth loss
  • Restore strength and function of the smile
  • Preserve the overall health of the smile

What To Expect

During your osseous surgery, you will be numb for the entire procedure. Many patients find that this surgery is not a pleasant experience, however, we can make you more comfortable with nitrous oxide (laughing gas) or oral conscious sedation if agreed upon with Dr. Kasarsky. After opening up the gum line in the area that needs treatment, our dentist will clean out the bacteria and give a smooth surface to any decayed bone if necessary. The gum line may be reshaped once it is put back into place and sutured.

Treatment Aftercare

Follow all of Dr. Kasarsky's post-surgery instructions given to you before the surgery, and call us if you experience excessive bleeding and/or pain, or other have other concerns. When you have advanced gum inflammation, it is really important to keep all of your annual check-ups and cleanings so that your dentist can track the changes in your gum tissue, tooth health, and signs of tooth decay before more serious and expensive procedures need to take place to correct it.

Osseous Surgery FAQs

Will it be painful?

You will be numb throughout the procedure, and may experience minor pain after the anesthesia has worn off. Generally, we suggest our patients take an over-the-counter pain medication if they feel discomfort from the surgery. It also helps to avoid eating hard foods, especially near areas that were treated.

How long is the surgery?

The number of areas of your gums to be treated will determine how long the procedure takes in our office. Each patient will have their own treatment plan. This is not a surgery that necessarily needs to be performed on every tooth.

How Long Will It Last?

Yes. We can repeat the surgical procedure if needed. Keep in mind, you can have osseous surgery on one area of the mouth, and need a different area treated at a later time. This surgery is, of course, not a permanent fix to your gum tissue abnormalities, but will improve your oral health.
